The longest day, Summer Solstice

Today on Monday 21 June 2010, thousands of Summer Solstice revellers have gathered at Stonehenge to watch dawn break on the longest day of the year. As the sun rose at 04:52 hours, a cheer went up from those gathered overnight at the stone circle on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire. This year the weather was good and the crowds were treated to clear views of the sunrise - previous years have seen the spectacle obscured by mist and cloud.

The solstice annually attracts an eclectic mix - Druids, hippies, sun worshippers and those who are curious to experience the ancient festival. According Wiltshire Police spokesman nearly 20,000 people attended the event, with 15 arrests overnight for minor public disorder. Last year a record 36,500 revellers attended, causing traffic chaos and road closures.

It was announced last week that £10 million of funding for a proposed visitor centre at the prehistoric site has been axed, putting the plans on hold indefinitely.

BT mark 1,000 days to go by lighting up London

On the evening of 31 October 2009, the London night sky was transformed like never before as the BT Tower, one of the capital’s most iconic landmarks, was spectacularly lit up with a firework display to celebrate 1,000 days to go to the London 2012 Olympic Games. For the first time that evening, a screen at the top of the Tower displayed the number of days to the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Games.

Millions watched the event live on the National Lottery Draw. You might find some photos capturing the great moment:

Fathers of daughters become more left-wing

You might find it interesting. Economists claim to have found a correlation between the number of daughters and sons in a household and their father's political views. According to the research, fathers become more Left-wing if they have daughters because girls are more socially conscious.

Professor Andrew Oswald, from Warwick University, and Dr Nattavudh Powdthavee, of York University, wrote in an unpublished article that has been submitted to an economics journal: "This paper provides evidence that daughters make people more Left-wing, while having sons, by contrast, makes them more Right-wing."

By analysing data in the British Household Panel Survey, they found that 67 per cent of parents with three sons and no daughters voted for Labour or the Liberal Democrats. This rose to 77 per cent in households with three daughters and no sons. A similar pattern was found among families with two and four children.

The Duck Island

There is a myth that feeding ducks bring good luck. However, it seems that it is not working.

According to the newspapers today, the leader of the Conservative party a "furious" David Cameron yesterday forced a former Conservative minister to stand down as an MP at the next general election after he admitted claiming £1,645 for a floating "duck island" in his garden.

Sir Peter Viggers, a Northern Ireland Office minister in the late 1980s, was told by the Tory leader that he would be stripped of the Conservative whip immediately unless he agreed to retire.

Cameron acted after the Daily Telegraph revealed that Viggers, the MP for Gosport since 1974, had claimed £32,000 in gardening expenses over three years at his Hampshire home. This included a claim for a floating duck island designed to protect his ducks from foxes. This was rejected by the Commons authorities.
